Sausage and Potatoes Camping Recipe
This simple griddle sausage and potatoes recipe is one of our go-to camping meals. It calls for minimal ingredients and prep work, travels well, and is a crowd pleaser!
Our family loves to go camping. We’ve been camping for years, starting in a tent and moving through several different campers until we finally built our own camper out of a cargo trailer during the pandemic. You can check out our camper build and some of our camping adventures on our YouTube channel, Build Your Own Adventure.
Feeding a family while camping can be a little overwhelming. You’re usually working with limited ingredients, space, and cooking equipment. Over the years, I have come up with a few tried and true recipes that are easy to throw together while we’re out adventuring. And this sausage and potatoes recipe is at the top of the list!
My favorite thing about this recipe is that it’s so flexible. You can easily swap out ingredients with what your family prefers or what you have on hand. And you can also use several different cooking methods, depending on your camping situation.
I love cooking with smoked sausage when we’re camping. It’s packed with flavor, easy to pack and prep, and cooks up quickly. You can really use any kind of sausage your family prefers in this recipe.
For the potatoes, I usually go with frozen shredded hashbrowns, because they cook up quickly and require zero prep work. But thinly sliced fresh potatoes also work great, and they don’t require refrigeration if you’re limited on space or don’t have a freezer.
I added shrimp to this recipe just to switch it up a little and add another protein source, but it’s totally optional. You can also add diced chicken breast or keep it simple and just use the sausage.
It would also be delicious to add some veggies, like onions, peppers or mushrooms. I skipped those in this recipe and just cooked some frozen ears of corn because it was easy and my kids like that better.
Okay, now let’s talk about how to cook up all this goodness. I LOVE my Blackstone griddle, and I cook the vast majority of our meals on it when we’re camping. This is the model I have, it’s large enough to feed our family but still travels well. If you don’t have a Blackstone, you can use a regular electric griddle, a large sauté pan, a cast iron skillet, or even make foil packs.
Now just throw everything onto your chosen cooking method and let it all mingle together! I put the potatoes down first so they can start browning a little. Then goes the sausage, and last but not least, the shrimp, because they don’t take long to cook. Season everything according to your family’s taste. I like this Shake Tasty by Fire and Smoke Society, it’s a good all-purpose seasoning and saved me from having to pack a bunch of different spices.
That’s it! A simple and satisfying meal that doesn’t require a lot of prep work and comes together quickly. Cleanup is a breeze too, since we cooked everything together on one surface. Now, go have fun and enjoy your trip!
Also, don’t think that you have to wait to go camping to try this recipe! Because it’s so simple and flexible, it’s a great weeknight meal at home as well!
